The King bragging about his "cosmic" body.

In the Katamari series, characters known as "cousins" are seen throughout the gameplay. However, "Cosmic" is a more accurate name due to these creatures being from The Cosmos. Though they are seen many times throughout the game, not much is directly stated regarding their lifestyle and anatomy. All of the information is taken from the games or other pieces of official media, whether it be from The King's speaking before and after stages, cutscenes, descriptions, or official artwork. In the Cowbear stage, The King states "No rest for the Cosmic, is there, little one?", which confirms that "Cosmic" is the official term for the creatures of the Cosmos. The Cosmos is home to other species such as the jerboa-like Martians mentioned in Roller Roaster, the Diamond Turtle coveted by the young King in Chateau Notre Desir and more.

Anatomy[]

Bodily Features[]

  • The average cousin body features the following: A pill or tube shaped head (other shapes on occasion), sunflower seed-shaped eyes, an orange triangular nose, and a humanoid body with arms and legs. From infancy to childhood, they retain a simplistic body structure and usually have antennae. Most cousins are presumably nearing adolescence, due to their childlike appearance when comparing them to the designs of the teenage King and Queen.
  • Cousins are an alien species, but are also mammalian. They are warm blooded, have hair, give birth to live young, and live on an omnivorous diet. (With an exception of Beyond, who is a vegetarian by choice)
    • They also seem to have both sweat glands and mammary glands. Like humans, Cousins eat, drink, use the bathroom, and engage in romantic activities.
      • Daisy is described as "a mammal who's loose with her time", which further proves this.
  • Vertebrates with binocular vision (front facing eyes) are almost always predators instead of prey. Cosmics have eyes that face forward instead of eyes on the sides of their heads.
    • On occasion, Cosmics can be seen glowing eyes. Predator species have a reflective layer behind their pupils which aid them in night vision.[1]
  • They also seem to have a humanlike muscular structure and genitalia, as seen with The King. However, this is only depicted in the artwork when they are either teenagers or adults.
  • As mentioned by the King in the Collection, they are able to change their size. This explains why cousins are found at different sizes throughout levels,
  • Most of the cousins we have seen have human skin tones, thought we have seen cousins with non-human skin tones, such as gray, blue and white.
  • It is possible that Cousins engage in incest. The two cousins Lalala and Colombo are confirmed to be mutually attracted to each other, even though they are both The Prince's first cousins.
    • While it is possible they come from different sides of The Prince's family, it has never been confirmed one way or the other, leaving it up to speculation.
    • This could explain the odd looks of many cousins, such as Odeon.
    • Katamari Damacy Online's romance feature further pushes this theory.

Internal Body[]

  • In Chateau Notre Desir, The King reminisces about Papa making him eat cheese to strengthen his bones and teeth. Though the young King hated it, he loves it now.[2]
  • In the comic we are shown Opeo's skeleton, which proves that their pill heads are apart of their skeleton.
    • A doodle of a skeleton cousin shows this same concept.
  • Keita Takahashi confirmed that Cosmics are born with a long head.[3]
    • However, in a Touch My Katamari cutscene, The King can be seen with his tube piece off of his head. This may just be a case of AC-BU's unique style defying logic.
      • The King's skeleton can be partially seen in Katamari Damacy's Game Over screen.

Biological Anomalies[]

  • Sherman's body is said to be able to be melted. It does so in the comic but it is rebuilt by Ace.
  • The King is shown to be able to change his face while playing peekaboo with his baby son. This could be a similar situation to Signolo's face, as it can light up.
  • Honey, Foomin, and Miki are a few of the cousins shown to be able to morph their heads. Along with this, The King can be seen stretching his head on the box art of Touch My Katamari. However, most cousins are shown to have a "hard" head. In Chapter 4, when the teen King and Queen hit their heads against each other, a hard clashing sound effect can be heard.
  • Papa can extend his arm to a great length, so it is possible that others of this species can also extend their limbs
  • It is unknown how Opeo survived with a giant hole in his torso.
  • Their species is far stronger than humans, as seen with The Prince rolling huge katamaris, The King being able to lift those Katamaris, The Queen rolling a snowball around the whole Earth, and so on.
  • The King can sleep extremely long amounts of time (most likely due to hangovers). The King states: "So. We managed to sleep for 500 hours." in Katamari Damacy's dialogue.

Lifecycle[]

We don't know much about the overall life cycle of a cousin due to a lack of in depth details, despite the fact that we've seen The King age from a child into an adult. However, it is implied that Cosmic children are pretty independent from an early age, due to having their own planets to live on.

Infant Stage[]

An infant cousin can vary in size, but are usually very small. Two examples of infant cousins have been shown in Katamari; The King as a baby in Beautiful Katamari, and The Prince as a newborn in We ♥ Katamari. Infants usually wear diapers and are implied to be breastfed, as mentioned in one of the Chapter 11 variations. Pu is shown to have an outie navel.

Child Stage[]

The majority of cousins we see are children.[4] They have featureless hands and feet and are larger than infants. Lalala is shown to have a featureless naked body, but Lucha and Kunihiro have nipples. Lalala's case is most likely censorship due to her being a girl.

Preteen Stage[]

The only preteen cousin that is known of is Foomin. She is near her growth period, but is still prepubescent. Her personality has become more "sexy".[5]

Teen Stage[]

Gameoverking

The King asking if "puberty" caused the Prince to fail the Make Virgo stage.

At this stage, cousins gain a humanlike structure. This includes detailed hands, detailed limbs, and a longer head. At this stage, they seem to begin puberty.

Adulthood Stage[]

At this age, cousins are fully grown. Sexual dimorphism is implied in three ways: The males, such as The King and Papa, have far more detailed faces than women, the women are smaller than the men, and the men have tube shaped heads whereas the females have pill shaped heads. It is speculated that adult cousins either lose their antennae or they sink into the skull.

Old Age Stage[]

Papa is shown to be the oldest character known in game. Though he became sick at the end of Chapter 8 and Chapter 9, he is still alive. However, in this Tweet, The King states Papa has senility.

Afterlife[]

Angels exist in the Katamari Universe. They are stated to be princes which have passed on. It is unknown if these princes passed at an early age, hence the Angels' youthful appearance, or if they are taking a juvenile form. It is shown that The King can physically regress into an "Inner Child" form, so this may be the case.

Lifestyle[]

Just like Earth, The Cosmos have many activities for the people to enjoy.

Activities shown or mentioned in games:

Trivia[]

  • For some reason, The King states here that the most touching moment of his life was "when The Prince broke the egg's shell...We felt a sense of fatherhood...responsibility...love... It was the moment when We felt a surge of emotion." However, We ♥ Katamari shows that The Prince did not hatch out of an egg. The situation may be a zany response from the hung-over King, changed lore, a metaphor, or plain sarcasm. It is known that The King was not present in the room during The Prince's birth.
  • The King seems be confused by human products such as nail clippers, stating that humans use it for their "claws", even though the King is depicted with fingernails in a piece of Touch My Katamari artwork. This may be the King's zaniness, or retcon.
  • Along with nail clippers, The King doesn't quite understand toothbrushes and toothpaste, even though he clearly has teeth.
  • Wp23 1

The King and Queen are at the top of the pyramid, with the Hoshinos below them.

The Cosmic Species are heavily implied to be above humans, as shown in this image. The prologue of We ♥ Katamari shows that The King has a godlike status among the humans.
